LoRa is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) communication technology with characteristics of long-distance transmission and low power consumption. The transmission distance can range from 1 to 10 kilometers, the built-in battery can last for a long time, and the cost burden is relatively low.

In order to accelerate the applications of smart cities and innovative Internet of Things (IoT), Taipei City Government has created the nation's first "Internet of Things Experimentation Platform" that covers the entire city and provides a free wireless sensing network "LoRa Development and Application", attracting more than 80 new ventures to sign up for trials. It also holds series of seminars and workshops, inviting Gemtek, IBM and other industry leaders to conduct research and development commentary, and also delivering modular implementation and cloud development courses, so that innovative applications based on the LoRa technology can reach the maximum potential.

The new ventures proposed a wide range of application scenarios, including (1) air pollution sensing: making sensing systems into action-sensing versions, and combining data correction and energy-saving technologies to allow air pollution sensing to be changed from fixed-point to mobile one with flexible-points. For the mobile type, the space-time resolution of sensing data is greatly improved, and the feasibility of dynamic pollution source tracking through motional sensing is also explored. (2) Smart parking: For urban traffic management units, smart parking was heavily restricted by sensing, power, communications, and cloud computing technologies in the past. For a long time, there was no effective smart parking solution. The application of LoRa technology in smart roadside parking management, with the combination of the sense of microwave measuring, and low-power solar charging circuits, together with big data cloud data platform, can detect vehicle movements and provide parking space information.
